The boom in audiobook sales continues with 2016 sales increasing 31 percent over 2015 figures, as reported by Good E-Reader . Globally, the value of the audiobook market is estimated at $3.5 billion dollars. At the same time, ebook sales in the US topped over 487 million a year, according to Author Earnings.
An article in the Wall Street Journal in July of 2016 proclaimed that audiobooks have become the fastest-growing format in the book world. The Audio Publisher Association pointed to sales increases of 21 percent in the U.S. and Canada between 2014 and 2015. (July 2016)
As detailed in an article on The Digital Reader, Scribd has shut down their unlimited subscription service as of March 2016. Instead, readers get access to three ebooks and one audiobook per month, selected from choices in a catalog of bestsellers. Apparently, some customers responded to the digital equivalent of an eat-all-you-want buffet by gluttonously downloading large quantities of digital content.(February 2016)
Publishing Perspectives reports that, according to Nielsen Book, self-published books (digital and print) represented 5% of the total market in 2014, totaling £58 million of book spend and some 17 million units. Self-published titles represented 5% of all books sold (again print and digital) and 15% of all ebooks (up 16% in the first quarter of 2015 and up 77% since 2012). (June 10, 2015)
